The article considers the possibilities of using of pedagogical ideas for the formation of mental calculation skills based on the well-known manuals of methodologists of the late part of 19th century S.A.Rachinsky and A.F.Malinin. The works published by the authors are not only a methodological guideline, but also an inexhaustible storehouse of practical tasks for modern schools.
