The article discusses the importance of applying the competency approach to the training of future professionals in the modernization of higher education. It is shown that systematic interpretation of the competence-based approach is designed not to upgrade the existing model of education, but radical change the educational space. It is proved that the competence approach in today’s world is a challenge. The development of theoretical and practical bases of this process is not easy task. Particular attention is paid to the necessity of acquirement of economic competence by bachelors of non-economic areas. The authors carried out the research, the main purpose of which was to identify and ascertain the level of development of economic competences at bachelor directions 43.03.01 “Service” and 43.03.02 “Tourism” of the North Caucasus Federal University and on this basis to develop recommendations for improving the teaching and learning process and methodological tools.
