A retrospective look at the history of the development of higher education in China over more than a century shows its evolution from its inception at the end of the Qing Dynasty, through a complex and winding path in the Republic of China era, to active exploration after the founding of the PRC, and finally to a period of rapid development under the reform and opening-up policy. Higher education has gone from the elitist and mass stage to the modern stage of universal accessibility. Throughout this time, the scope and quality of higher education have undergone significant qualitative improvements.
