The article examines interpersonal relationships as a complex of interactions between members of a community, which are mainly based on various types of communication, primarily visual or non-verbal (such as appearance and gestures) and linguistic or verbal. The author analyzes the interpersonal relationships of primary school students with mental retardation in various educational settings – a boarding school and a comprehensive school. The article emphasizes the importance of involving specialists in the work on developing interpersonal relationships and communication skills in children of these groups, the need to assist in the socialization and individualization of children of this category as individuals and to carry out timely correction. Methodological recommendations are offered for teachers and parents to overcome the communication deficiencies of younger students in various educational settings.
