A MODERN VIEW ON THE ETIOLOGY, PATHOGENESIS AND PATHOMORPHOLOGY OF CERVICAL EROSION
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
According to the literature, true erosion occurs in no more than 2% of cases, however, the term "erosion" is used by patients, and often by clinicians, to replace another condition – ectopia, which is already significantly widespread: it is found when examined in mirrors in 38.8% of the female population [1,2]. Cervical erosion is a violation of the integrity of the epithelial cover of the vaginal part of the cervix. The disease has a benign course, but is the pathophysiological basis for the easy introduction of HPV into the exposed basal cells of the epithelial layer, which can subsequently lead to precancerous and cervical cancer. Erosion is a consequence of mechanical damage to a healthy epithelium (careless insertion of a mirror, rough sexual intercourse, sex toys) or, which is significantly more common, compromised by an inflammatory process, oncology or vulvovaginal atrophy. As is known, the damaged mucous membrane of the cervix, which already does not have a barrier cornea even in a healthy state, is vulnerable to the development of the infectious process. Ectopia is a physiological process, and, according to modern concepts, does not require treatment. However, it is proven that HPV infection is more likely in the presence of ectopia [1]. HPV entering the body of a woman with pre-existing erosive changes or the physiological state of the presence of a cylindrical epithelium on the surface of the exocervix of the cervix can lead to adverse consequences.
