In ancient times, Chinese medical science described symptoms consistent with coronary heart disease. In the course of temporal changes, integrated therapeutic approaches have been developed that include dietary intake, regular exercise and meditation practice. Coronary heart disease is one of the clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis and correlates with a number of risk factors, among which arterial hypertension and hyperlipidaemia are prominent. The therapeutic process encompasses non-invasive and invasive techniques, including percutaneous coronary intervention procedures and aortocoronary bypass surgery. Significant advances in the treatment of coronary heart disease include innovations in stent development and the use of coronary angioplasty techniques.
