IN MEMORY OF BORIS VSEVOLODOVICH SOMOV

On December 2, 2022, a world-famous scientist in the field of space plasma physics, Professor Boris Vsevolodovich Somov, passed away.

Boris Vsevolodovich was interested in a wide range of problems, but he devoted almost all his life to studying magnetic reconnection, a fundamental process in space plasma. He began his academic career as a student of S.I. Syrovatsky; with him, he created and further developed the theory of magnetic reconnection and current sheets. This theory underlies the physics of unsteady phenomena of solar activity. Boris Vsevolodovich made a huge contribution to the theory of solar flares and to the understanding of the nature of their X-ray and ultraviolet radiation, as well as to the study into the formation of coronal loops and mechanisms of formation of plasma ejections in the solar atmosphere.

Boris Vsevolodovich was a member of the editorial board of our journal — we will miss this deep theoretical physicist, calm and friendly critic in scientific discussions, pleasant and friendly in communication.

The Russian and international scientific community has suffered a heavy loss. The memory of Boris Vsevolodovich will forever remain in our hearts, his scientific achievements will be preserved in numerous works that will be endlessly quoted, including in our journal.
