This article considers Anton Popovič as the founder of the semiotic and communication theory of translation, conceived on the basis of the general communication model. Popovič understood translationas intercultural communication, and it was through this understanding that he introduced various concepts in translation. The article alsoexplores Zora Jesenská – a famousbut tabooed Slovak translator, one of the founders of the Slovak School of Translation as well as stressing her tragic fate. Jesenská´s translations from Russian into Slovak are grounded in Popovič´s communication conception theory of translation.

Язык представляет собой культурное творение человека, которое в силу своей природы способно далее совершенствовать человеческую индивидуальность. Язык человека — это удивительная коммуникативная система, развивающаяся вместе с человеком и культурным пространством, в котором он существует. Каждый язык при этом тесно связан с культурой его носителя. Пространство, в котором мы живем, богато культурным и языковым разнообразием. Ныне необходимо, более чем когда-либо, думать о культурной идентичности, осознавать свои неповторимые национальные черты, потому что современная интеграция и процессы глобализации разрушают до сих пор сохранявшуюся способность соседствующих культурных идентичностей общаться и сосуществовать.
