Abstract. The development of scientific knowledge in special education, as in any other field of science, is of significant interest. However, in the last decades of the 21st century, insufficient attention has been paid to the study of this topic in the field of special (correctional) pedagogy. This makes it important to analyze the emergence of new and further development of existing scientific fields in special education in the context of dissertation research in the specialty 13.00.03 (5.8.3) – correctional pedagogy as the implementation of social mandates in the field of special education. This article presents a retrospective analysis of the development of scientific knowledge in various areas of special education, reflecting the topics and dynamics of dissertation research in the specialty correctional pedagogy, defended and implemented in educational practice in the first decades of this century. Content analysis, retrospective analysis, and practical methods were used in preparing this publication. The results of the study suggest that the development of scientific knowledge in special education is uneven due to the influence of a number of factors, both objective and subjective.
