Oxidative stress (OS) is a key pathogenetic mechanism involved in the development of inflammatory periodontal diseases, such as chronic generalized periodontitis and gingivitis. This article presents a review of contemporary studies focusing on the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which free radical processes affect periodontal tissues, the influence of systemic factors (diabetes mellitus, bronchiectasis, stress) on the intensity of oxidative stress, as well as the possibilities of pathogenetic correction using antioxidant therapy. The mechanisms of oxidative damage formation, key biomarkers, and experimental and clinical approaches to reducing oxidative stress are discussed.
