As a result of the judicial reform of 1864, which aimed to democratize the judicial system, the Russian Empire introduced jury trials. From that point on, the judicial system became classless, and the main principles of the criminal process were publicity, oral proceedings, immediacy, adversarial proceedings, and freedom of evaluation of evidence. Among the supporters of this new form of justice in the Russian Empire was the lawyer A.F. Koni (1844-1927). He predicted that the jury system would have a long and stable existence, and he spoke about its role in criminal proceedings from a moral standpoint. Koni actively supported the reformist sentiments of the time and advocated for the democratization of criminal proceedings. He believed that the criminal process of his day was characterized by ill-informed arbitrariness, bureaucracy, and corruption. Koni's contributions to the development of modern criminal proceedings cannot be overstated. The criminal justice system played an important role in his scientific and professional activities. Anatoly Fedorovich was involved in the development of standards that had a significant impact on modern criminal justice.
