Abstract:
The monograph is the first attempt to study the previously unknown and mostly lost iconostases of Central Russia of Modern times, before the break in the history of the continuous evolution of the altar barrier. Based on the results of the art history analysis, the main trends in the stylistic and iconographic development of iconostases are revealed. The considered works of the XVIII — early XX century include monuments of the Oryol, Bryansk, Yelets, Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod lands, unique ensembles of Arzamas and Murom. The lack of literature and sources is compensated by information from more than 50 archival documents introduced into scientific circulation, including pictorial material. The monograph continues the diverse works on the history of architecture, art and the Russian Church and supplements them with previously unknown facts and details. The results of the study are presented by a number of author's provisions, summary tables and diagrams — reconstructions of altar barriers. The work is aimed at specialists and a wide range of readers interested in the history of church art.
