An effective company and project management system should ensure a balance between business objectives and the needs of society, contribute to the stable development of enterprises in an increasingly uncertain environment. The article substantiates the necessity of using project management mechanisms as a key tool for improving the sustainability of companies, considers standards and ways of adapting sustainable development goals to project manage-ment methodology. In addition, based on the results of analyzing the approaches of foreign and Russian oil and gas companies, specific measures for the introduction of sustainable development principles into the practice of project management are proposed.
