The article is devoted to a certain paradox that exists in the field of engineering, which is understood as the management of industrial and infrastructure projects. On the one hand, recently there has been an activity of state bodies and the business community towards the topic of engineering, on the other hand, there are contradictions in the terminology of engineering, leading to the fact that the same terms are understood by different people in different ways, or existing concepts are interpreted according to differently. The existing uncertainty and chaos in engineering in the terminology of engineering requires that the state and the business community finally agree on the definition of a number of concepts. The author of the article shows examples of these concepts and suggests ways to solve this problem.
