THE RECEPTION OF IDENTITY THEORY IN ANGOLAN MEDIA: AN ANALYSIS OF PUBLICATIONS IN THE LEADING PRINT MEDIA OF THE REPUBLIC OF ANGOLA
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Introduction. The relevance of this study is determined by the need to conceptualize the role of media discourse in shaping postcolonial identity and to clarify the specific features of the Angolan case within the broader context of African and decolonial studies. A comprehensive analysis of Angolan media discourse as a tool for the formation and transformation of postcolonial identity makes it possible to connect theoretical concepts of identity with the empirical study of a specific experience. Aim. The aim of the study is to identify the specific characteristics of the reception and interpretation of identity theory in the Angolan media space. Methodology, methods, and techniques. The methodological foundation of the study is an interdisciplinary approach combining principles of cultural studies, media studies, and postcolonial studies. The theoretical framework is based on concepts of identity, understood as a dynamic socio-discursive construct formed within the space of public communication. Methods of critical discourse analysis, narrative analysis, content analysis of thematic blocks, and analysis of linguistic strategies were also applied to examine the structures and narrative patterns through which representations of national, cultural, and historical identity are constructed. Results. The findings confirm that in a postcolonial context identity should be considered as a dynamic construct formed through the interaction of memory politics, cultural practices, and strategies of institutional legitimation. The analysis of publications in a leading Angolan media outlet revealed the formation of several models of identity: national-state, memorial, modernization-global, and cultural-traditional. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the reception of identity theory in Angolan society has been analyzed based on publications in a leading print media outlet of the Republic of Angola. Practical significance. The results obtained may be applied in further research in cultural studies, media and communication studies, as well as in the development of analytical and educational materials.
