OMSK IN THE FORMATION OF CIVIL AVIATION IN WESTERN SIBERIA: AIR STATION, AIR ROUTE AND REGIONAL FUNCTIONS IN THE 1920S-1960S
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
This article examines the role of Omsk in the formation of civil aviation in Western Siberia from the 1920s to the 1960s. The relevancc of the topic lies in the fact that the history of Omsk aviation infra-structure shows how air transport developed from an experimental mail route into an instrument of economic, administrative and social integration of a large Siberian region. The purpose of the study is to identify the functions performed by the Omsk air station and later by Omsk airport within the Sovi-et air transport system. The source base includes published documents and reference materials on the history of civil aviation, information from the Russian State Archive of Economy on air route records, Omsk local history resources, academic studies on civil aviation in Western Siberia and publications on the history of Omsk airport. The study applies problem-chronological and historical-comparative methods. The authors conclude that Omsk was not merely an intermediate landing point on the Mos-cow - Irkutsk route, but a regional node combining mail and passenger traffic, technical support, med-ical aviation and the task of transport connectivity in Western Siberia.
