LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK IN THE STUDENT UNION: HISTORICAL CONSTANTS AND CONTEXTUAL VARIABLES
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
The article examines the evolution of leadership and teamwork in Russian student trade unions from the 1990s to the 2020s, positioning them as platforms for developing leadership qualities and civic engagement among young people. The study identifies a contradiction between the need for effective leadership models and the insufficient understanding of their historical dynamics. Constant and context- dependent characteristics of leadership and teamwork models are revealed, with their development traced in relation to state youth policy and socio-economic changes. The research employs historical and comparative methods, case studies, and analysis of regulatory legal acts and archival materials. The study delineates three developmental stages of student trade unions between the 1990s and 2020s: 1990s: survival and legitimation, hierarchical model, leader-as-protector. 2000s: institutionalization, mixed model, leader-as-organizer. 2010–2020s: digitalization and inclusivity, flexible model, leader-as-innovator. The paper identifies core (constant) elements of the leadership profile and their context-driven modifications. It demonstrates that the evolution proceeds from reactive to proactive leadership models, while preserving constant qualities. This research addresses gaps in the study of the historical development of youth leadership in Russia. The findings are significant for improving student self-governance practices, training a new generation of leaders, and forecasting the development of youth organizations.
