The relevance of this study is determined by the fact that any large-scale economic crisis is accompanied by a wide range of socioeconomic problems, one of which is rising unemployment. On the one hand, the decline in purchasing power due to rising unemployment negatively impacts demand and discourages production. On the other hand, rising unemployment induces increased social tensions. Therefore, studying the causes of unemployment and ways to overcome it represents an important theoretical and methodological task. The aim of this paper is to examine, from a theoretical and methodological perspective, the causes of unemployment in the USA during the Great Depression, its impact on the country's economy, and ways to overcome this socioeconomic problem. The scientific novelty of the obtained results lies in demonstrating that the USA was unable to resolve the unemployment problem that arose during the Great Depression through economic development. Only World War II (like World War I before it) provided the USA with a solution to the unemployment problem and the country's wealth. The practical significance of the obtained results lies in the understanding that one of the scenarios for the growth of unemployment, demonstrated by the example of the Great Depression in the USA, is an intensive growth of the discrepancy between the reduction in the export of goods in the real asset market with the continued growth of speculative activity in the financial asset market.
