This article analyzes L. Andreev's drama "The Thought" from the perspective of its genre affiliation with Russian intellectual drama of the early 20th century. The author highlights typological features of the work's poetics that demonstrate the intellectual focus of the artistic text: the playwright's philosophical concept, his unique aesthetic system, a special type of conflict and a new type of protagonist, the play's intertextual background, etc. Thus, the study proves that L. Andreev consciously chose this genre strategy in order to create a repertoire for the "theatre of panpsychism" he formulated in his theory, which he planned to implement at the Moscow Art Theatre. However, an analysis of the drama "The Thought" and the history of its production in the early 20th century demonstrate that at that period in the development of the performing arts, adequate means of adapting such literary material for the stage had not yet been developed to realize the author's idea to the extent envisioned by L. Andreev and the play's director, Vl.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko. "Mysl" was ahead of its time and therefore was not appreciated by the contemporary theatre community.
