The purpose of this paper is to trace the formation and development of prosecutorial oversight in the administrative-territorial entities of the Russian Empire from 1731 to 1762. The research sources include regulatory legal acts from the period under review, contained in the Complete Collection of Laws of the Russian Empire, as well as various information on the activities of prosecutors in the provinces during this period, based on published materials stored in Russian archival collections. Based on an analysis of these sources, the author arrives at the following conclusions. The establishment of provincial prosecutors completed the process of forming the vertical structure of prosecutorial oversight in the Russian Empire. The organization of prosecutorial oversight in Russia in its early years (1722–1731) was based on a subject-based (sectoral) principle. Beginning in 1731, following the establishment of provincial prosecutors, a system of prosecutorial oversight organized along territorial lines began to emerge in the Russian state, alongside the objective principle. The provincial prosecutor's office can be viewed as a system of individuals holding public office (provincial prosecutors) acting on the basis of legal acts independent of provincial authorities, directly subordinate to the prosecutor general, and exercising their powers aimed at ensuring the unity of the country's legal space, unifying the system of public administration, and protecting the public interests and rights of Russian citizens.
