The paper describes the scientific and pedagogical activities of a prominent Russian scientist in the field of design and manufacturing technology of metal-cutting tools, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Nikolay Andreevich Shevchenko, who headed the Department of Metal-Cutting Machines and Tools at Bryansk Institute of Transport Engineering (now Bryansk State Technical University) for many years. In his works, N.A. Shevchenko gave the foundations of a new scientific direction in the field of mechanical engineering technology – the doctrine of constructing and designing cutting tools. He was one of the first tool technologists in the USSR.
