The purpose of the study is to develop and test a new methodology for assessing the competitiveness of Russian banks based on a modified hierarchy analysis method. The subject area of the study is the competitiveness of Russian banks. Research methodology: a new methodology for assessing the competitiveness of Russian banks is proposed using a modified hierarchy analysis method using a special algorithm. The modification consists in a significant change in the mathematical apparatus of T. Saati's traditional method of hierarchy analysis. Experts are excluded from the study, and estimates are included in the pairwise comparison matrices after being calculated using a new formula based on objective numerical data on bank competitiveness indicators. New criteria and indicators for assessing the competitiveness of banks in a single hierarchy are proposed. Originality and significance of the results: an overview of the theory and practice of competitiveness in the scientific electronic library (elibrary.ru ) for more than the last 15 years, characterized by the breadth and depth of the analysis. The methodology is completely objective and excludes the human factor, using a unique mathematical apparatus, the approbation of which was announced in science for the first time. The main results of the study: using a new methodology, an assessment of the level of competitiveness was carried out to identify the competitive positions and weaknesses of some Russian banks for Alfa-Bank JSC. The obtained research results will help the management of Alfa-Bank JSC to develop solutions to increase the level of competitiveness in the Russian market in the banking sector. As the main or complementary methodology, it will be useful for commercial banks, rating and consulting agencies operating in the banking sector, legal entities and other persons solving the problem of choosing an effective bank for cooperation in terms of criteria and competitiveness indicators. The methodology has the potential to expand the scope of research to assess the competitiveness of any number of commercial banks in Russia and abroad.
