<abstract xml:lang="ru">

The study focuses on investigating the patterns of spatial distribution of organic carbon in the upper mineral layer of forest soils within the forest-steppe zone of the Voronezh Region. A systematic soil sampling at a depth
of 0–10 cm was carried out, taking into account the parcel structure of two contrasting forest phytocoenoses: a pine stand (Pinus sylvestris L.) with the participation of common oak (Quercus robur L.) and a polydominant broadleaf forest composed of common oak (Q. robur L.), Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.), and small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata Mill.). The chemical analysis of the soils was conducted by means of high-temperature catalytic combustion to determine the carbon content. The obtained data indicate that carbon content in gray-humus soils formed under the coniferous forest phytocoenosis mainly varied from 1,5 % to 2,0 %, whereas in the gray-humus gleyic soils of the oak forest it reaches
2,8 %–3,0 %. The maximum carbon stocks, reaching up to 25 t C / ha, were recorded in oak forest sites. A comparison of several parcel groups within each stand revealed no statistically significant differences (p > 0,05). Only a trend toward increased carbon stocks was observed with a greater proportion of broadleaf species in the tree layer. It was also shown that carbon stocks in soils within a tessera vary slightly from trunk-adjacent to inter-crown areas with no statistically significant differences identified among trunk, under-crown, and inter-crown zones. The findings suggest that the dominance of certain tree species together with their associated shrub understory and herbaceous ground cover affects the overall range of fluctuations in carbon content and stocks in soils but does not provide evidence of a clear pattern in carbon stock distribution within individual parcels.
