B.A. Grushin belongs to a small group of researchers, rightfully called the founders of Soviet theoretical and empirical sociology. As a philosopher and methodologist he contributed significantly to the conceptual language of sociology, addressed many of the complex problems of the genesis of mass consciousness and behavior. A special place in his work was given to questions of the study of public opinion, he was the first in the USSR to begin conducting public opinion polls and publishing the results of the analysis of people’s opinions in the press. B.A. Grushin was one of the founders of the Russian (former all-Union) center for the study of public opinion. The material published herein is a synopsis statement in the format of a journal article of the main ideas of the eponymous book, which was dedicated to the IV International sociological conference “Following Grushin’s traditions” (2014). It acquaints the reader with the main stages of the biography and scientific achievements of B.A. Grushin.

Второго августа 2014 г. Борису Андреевичу Грушину (1929–2007) исполнилось бы 85 лет. Это повод, отправной момент для написания предлагаемой небольшой статьи, но ни в ее содержании, ни в стиле нет ничего «юбилейного». Ее цель рассказать о жизни и проанализировать творчество ученого, чей значительный вклад в развитие советской/российской науки и политической культуры давно признан нашим профессиональным сообществом.
Укажу тему, которoй, скажем, десять лет назад, тем более ранее, не было, но в последние годы она заявила о себе, и наше сообщество будет обсуждать ее всегда. Речь идет об отношении живущих и действующих социологов к научному наследию наших учителей, старших коллег, друзей. Жизнь так устроена, что они слабеют, отходят от активной научной деятельности, уходят от нас навсегда... В 2006 г. ушел из жизни Ю.А. Левада, через год скончался Б.А. Грушин, в следующие четыре года не стало А.Г. Здравомыслова, В.Н. Шубкина, И.С. Кона, в конце августа 2013 г. — Т.И. Заславской. Но сделанное ими — наше общее богатство, и судьба их наследия определяется не только тем, что ими сделано, но и нашим отношением к тому, что нам досталось как обладателям этого наследия.
Не буду расширять этот мартиролог, и так ясно, что естественный ход развития российского социологического сообщества поставил перед ним новую задачу — изучение биографий и деятельности тех, кто стоял у истоков современной российской социологии. Без этого невозможно обеспечить неразрывность российской социологии, выработать и сохранить научные традиции.
