The article analyzes the separate urban planning and construction and planning characteristics of tenement houses of the historic centre of St. Petersburg. The research results allowed to complement the existing urban typology of apartment buildings. Classification of structurally-planning decisions of old buildings. The obtained data can serve as the scientific basis for the development of projects of capital repairs or reconstruction of apartment houses. The data, based on the nature of the location of stairwells can use Naito in the development of evidence-based recommendations for the adjustment of the pre-revolutionary residential buildings for modern use.
