This article explores the history of the emergence of the awards system of the revived Cossacks within the framework of the all-Russian public organization "Union of Cossacks of Russia" and is directly linked not only to Cossack phaleristics in modern Russia but also to the history of the formation and development of the first all-Russian Cossack public organization, the "Union of Cossacks". The acquisition of a distinct socio-legal form of existence by the Cossacks amid the collapse of the Soviet state and rapid changes in society, at the onset of socio-political transformations and quasi-democratic experiments on the population, which created enormous difficulties, nevertheless became a catalyst for Cossack unification and created the conditions for the consolidation of Cossacks from all historical Cossack hosts within a single monolithic organization. This state of affairs was unacceptable to anti-Russian liberal forces, pro-Western structures, and their satellites, who had succeeded in massively penetrating all spheres of society and government bodies. Using all available resources, these destructive forces systematically hindered the development of the Cossacks, distorting and in every way hindering the adoption of legislative acts aimed at ensuring the legitimate interests of the Cossacks, their strategic development, and their return to traditional forms of management, self-government, and public service, including military, security, and educational services. As a result, structures were created that opposed the Cossack Union. Under the guise of ostensible public service and entry into the so-called "register," these structures created confusion within the Cossack ranks, causing a schism in virtually all Cossack troops and the largest Cossack organizations. Traitors to the Cossack oath also emerged, deliberately instigating a schism for personal gain, in exchange for personal preferences and positions, and state subsidies, in most cases granted not as a result of legislative initiatives benefiting the entire Cossacks, but rather in circumvention of them, as one-time handouts and personal favors. Newly created parallel para-Cossack organizations, both registered and public, began actively absorbing non-Cossack elements, which led to the complete deterioration of these organizations and the gradual departure of most representatives of the indigenous, tribal Cossacks, disillusioned with the very prospect of revival. These organizations began rapidly distributing high Cossack ranks, patents, and charters. All this was accompanied by the establishment of hundreds of various awards, orders, medals, and commemorative badges, an unprecedented phenomenon in Cossack and Russian history. The author estimates that the number of such badges currently stands at nearly two thousand. In addition to the widespread use of such badges, in the 2010s, a trend emerged to copy the official badges and awards of the Union of Cossacks and to illegally use the approved emblem and symbols of the Union of Cossacks. All of this was done with the goal of discrediting the Union of Cossacks and the entire Cossack community, which in popular culture has become associated with costumed Cossacks adorned with meaningless, fictitious awards. The article provides a list of the official awards of the Union of Cossacks, indicating the year of their establishment. It also highlights instances of illegal copying of Union of Cossacks awards, attempts to discredit the Union of Cossacks, and the illegal use of Union of Cossacks symbols. It also summarizes the uncontrolled production of "Cossack" badges and medals, and the effect this has achieved for opponents of the Cossacks.
