Communication consulting is a field of professional activity that has been practiced for more than a decade both in Russia and abroad. Consultants all over the world solve the communication tasks of companies: from the development of internal relations to the development of anti-crisis response strategies. Despite professional recognition, in the scientific community the phenomenon of communication consulting is considered pointwise, and if we talk about Russian literature – by units of authors. «We still know very little about the external and/or internal consulting work offered and performed by communications specialists» says the introduction of the International Journal of Strategic Communications [12]. This fact forms the relevance of the presented research, which aims to expand the theoretical foundations of communication consulting and conceptualize this phenomenon. The author substantiates an original comprehensive approach to identifying the phenomenon of communication consulting, as well as formulates a new definition of this professional activity. The methodological basis consists of the works of F.I. Sharkov, S.N. Apenko, F. Frandsen and the author’s developments of the above problem. The empirical basis of the study was the analyzed works of researchers, starting in 1984, on communication consulting, as well as on consulting in general. As a result, the author argues that communication consulting is a unique phenomenon of consulting activity. The proposed systematized base of the theoretical foundations of communication consulting can become a conceptual basis for further research of this phenomenon.
